Friday September 2nd
UPEI vs Holland College Women
The first game of the Mulligan Cup kicked off Friday night at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall. The match was a defensive battle between the Hurricanes and Panthers and took nearly the entire game to break the deadlock. In the 82nd minute, Panther senior Olivia Murphy snuck one past the Hurricane's keeper. Amanda Stanyer earned the clean sheet for the Panthers.
UPEI vs Holland College Men
The second game of the Mulligan Cup kicked off the men's action between the Hurricanes and Panthers. The Hurricanes wasted no time testing the Panthers as Nathan Ford was tested early and delivered a big save to keep the score 0-0. After the opening minutes of trading chances, both teams settled in and delivered strong defensive performances for most of the game. Panther Rookies Mohammad Jaber and Cohen Reddick-Stevens entered the game and began to push the pace offensively for the team. Jaber took the ball down the sideline before crossing it to a streaking Sam Smiley who barely missed opening the scoring. Reddick-Stevens shortly followed that chance when he danced through several Hurricane defenders before being saved by keeper Logan Doiron. Ibrahim Sanoh of the Hurricanes started an exciting final five minutes after he just missed scoring on a free kick. Panthers keeper Ford then was called upon to make several big saves from in close, including a dangerous shot from Sanoh in the final minute. Neither team could beat the strong play of the keepers and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Hurricanes Doiron and Panthers Ford with clean sheets.
Saturday September 3rd
Holland College vs UDeM Women
In the first game of day two Mulligan Cup action, the UDeM Bleu Aigles and Holland Hurricanes started things off. UDeM push the Hurricanes during the game with pressure offensively, but could not manage to get a ball by Nicole McInnis the Hurricanes keeper. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, with Hurricanes McInnis and UDeM Poirer earning clean sheets.
PEI FC vs UDeM Men
The UDeM Bleu Aigles Men faced PEI FC from the NBPSL in the second match of the day. PEI FC wasted no time getting on the board with former Panther Jared Murphy finding current captain Harmi Singh off of a corner kick for a goal. Murphy then followed that up with a goal of his own before the half ended. Singh opened the second half by cutting to the top of the box with the ball and firing a left footer bottom corner. In the 43rd, Jimmie Mayaleh earned a penalty shot after being fouled hard crashing the net after a save. Mayaleh capitalized putting PEI FC up 4-0. UDeM continued to push the pressure and received a penalty shot of their own in the 65th which Christian Yapi buried past keeper Nathan Ford. The final score of the game was 4-1 for PEI FC over UDeM.
UDeM vs UPEI Women
The third game featured two AUS womens teams in UDeM Bleu Aigles and UPEI Panthers. The first half of this match was a defensive back and forth between the teams with the Panthers creating the better of scoring chances. The second half featured several Panther rookies creating plays for their team starting with Tyffanie Bordage opening the scoring in the 46th minute. Bordage did not waste much time as she buried her second of the game shortly after. Other rookie Jenna Mae Ellsworth snuck a pass through the UDeM backline which eventually found Kristin Hood for the Panthers third goal. UDeM striker Yvette Tougouri found the back of the net late taking the clean sheet away from Hailey Flemming. UPEI Panthers defeated the Bleu Aigles by a final score of 3-1.
UDeM vs UPEI Men
The final game of the day featured UDeM Bleu Aigles and UPEI Panthers men's soccer teams. UPEI looked to score early and Mohammad Jaber lead the way before being fouled by UDeM keeper and earning himself a penalty kick in the 15th. Panthers midfielder Kieran Moore stepped up and just missed the left post to give the Panthers the lead. The game went to half with a 0-0 draw, but was broken shortly after half when Panther striker Lucas Holmes buried a shot from the penalty spot to take the lead 1-0. UDeM put the pressure on late but several key saves by Panthers keeper Alexander Khan earned the 1-0 victory for his team and clean sheet for himself.
Sunday September 4th Alumni Day
UPEI vs Panther Alumni Women
The first alumni game of the Mulligan Cup featured the UPEI Women Panthers and their Alumni team. The first half of the game had both teams trading chances on the offensive end with the Alumni Panthers being lead by Chelsie McInnis while the Panthers chances came from rookie Jade Bellmare. The second half opened with chances for Olivia Murphy and Danielle Younker of the Panthers and McInnis and Maria Schichilone of the Alumni team but all were met with saves by the keepers. The Panthers looked like they were poised to take the game when rookie Sarah MacVarish flew down the sideline on a break only to be met by Alumni keeper Ashley McKenna. UPEI looked to have taken the lead in the 75th minute but had their goal reversed on an offside call. The goalies proved to hard to beat and Amanda Stayner and Hailey Flemming for the Panthers and Ashley McKenna for the Alumni earned the clean sheets in the 0-0 draw.
UPEI vs PEI FC
The final game of the Mulligan Cup and Alumni day showcased the UPEI Panthers and PEI FC. PEI FC made up of current and former Panthers pushed the young UPEI team early, with Jared Murphy testing keeper Alex Khan in the first part of the game. Shortly after Murphy was able to capitalize on a UPEI turnover and broke the draw in the 28th minute as he snuck one past Khan. The Panthers looked to have equalized right before half as Lucas Holmes found rookie Cohen Reddick-Stevens and he let a shot go that was heading top corner before being stopped by FC keeper Nathan Ford. PEI FC continued their strong play into the second half when Brett Hogan found Murphy off a corner kick which he put off the crossbar and in for his second goal of the game. Murphy finished his hat trick in the 78th minute sliding a goal past Khan again. The final score was a 3-0 victory for PEI FC over the Panthers with Nathan Ford earning the clean sheet.
The UPEI Men's & Women's Soccer Panthers will open their season next weekend September 10th when they take on the St. FX X-Men on the road. They play the CBU Capers on the road September 11th before returning for their home opener against Acadia on Friday September 15th.
