Charlottetown, PEI (February 11, 2020)—Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and dedication to their respective sports. Congratulations to Sophie Vandale and Elijah Miller, the UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for February 3 to 9.
Vandale, a third-year science student from Winnipeg, Manitoba, plays defence on the UPEI women's hockey team. She recorded two assists over the weekend in the Panther's win against St. Thomas University and finished the regular season tied for first with a +22 rating. "Sophie's a consistent and steady force on the blue line," said coach Bruce Donaldson. "Her play is calm, and her demeanour on the ice is always positive."
Miller is a first-year point guard on the UPEI men's basketball team and a business student from Etobicoke, Ontario. He averaged 23 points per game this weekend in games against the UNB Reds and Acadia Axemen. "Over the span of two games this past weekend, Elijah played 63 minutes," said coach Darrell Glenn. "He shot 15–28 (53 per cent) from the field, handed out nine assists, and turned the ball over once. Elijah continues to show why he is one of the new bright stars in the league."
