Sprinter Bailey Smith captures silver at AUS Championships

(SAINT JOHN, N.B.) — Bailey Smith won her heat in the 60m and finished second in the finals to Maya Reynolds of Dalhousie in a time of 7.60 seconds. This was Smith's best time of the season but came up .02 seconds short of qualifying for the U SPORTS Championships held in Edmonton in two weeks.

The Dalhousie Tigers claimed both the men's and women's championship banners at the 2020 Subway AUS Track and Field Championships, presented by Keep It Social, hosted by the UNB Reds at the Irving Oil Field House in Saint John, N.B. this weekend.

The Tigers' women's team finished with 122 points to claim their 31st consecutive championship banner. The StFX X-Women team came in second with 92 points. The Moncton Aigles Bleues finished third with 70 points and the host UNB Reds finished in fourth with 60 points.

The Dalhousie men's squad earned 151 points and their 18th championship banner in 19 years.

The host UNB Reds men's team claimed second place with 128 points and the StFX X-Men finished third with 57 points.

Dalhousie's Lorena Heubach was named the championship's Subway AUS Athlete of the Meet after capturing four gold medals—including one in the 60m hurdles and another as a member of Dalhousie's 4x200m relay team. UNB's Michah Hesman was the championship's Subway AUS Athlete of the Meet on the men's side. He captured gold medals in the men's heptathlon as well as the men's pole vault. He also won bronze in the men's 60m hurdles.

DAY 1 — AUS Track and Field Championships 2020 UPEI Results

Highlighting the results for Day 1 of the championships for UPEI were a number of personal bests including:

Malcolm Gilman 5th in the shot put with season best 11.44m.

Danielle Younker 7th in the 1000m with a personal best 3:09.18.

Matt Kozma 14th in the 1000m with a personal best 2:49.59.

Hassan Itani 14th in 1000m with a personal best of 2:55.53.

Patrick Fletcher 23rd in 3000m with a personal best of 10:23.69.

Dan McGuire 21st in 3000m 9:51.35.

Nathalie Lane 13th in 300m with a personal best of 45.20. 

Hannah Ives 25th in 300m with a personal best of 49.64.

Yazen Nelson 18th in 300m with a personal best of 39.32.

Fahad Ahmed 21st in 300m with a personal best of 41.14.

Ellis Blay 22nd in 300m with a personal best of 41.87.

Gemma Shea 14th in shot put 7.27m


DAY 2 — AUS Track and Field Championships 2020 UPEI Results

Bailey Smith won her heat in the 60m and finished second in the finals to Maya Reynolds of Dalhousie in a time of 7.60 seconds. 

Danielle Younker finished 5th out of 28 runners in the 600m with a personal best time of 1:43.10.

Malcolm Gilman finished fifth in the weight throw with a throw of 12.25m.

Fahad Ahmad finished 7th in the high jump with a jump of 1.75m.

Zach Wilson qualified for the B final in the 60m but was unable to compete due to an injury. He finished 12th out of 33 sprinters.

Noah Duckworth qualified for the B final in the 60m with a personal best time of 7.45 and he ran 7.51 in the final. He finished 15th out of 33 sprinters.

Hannah Ives finished 20th out of 25 in the 600m with a time of 1:59.13.

Dan McGuire finished 16 out of 18 in the 600m with a time of 1:33.18.

Matt Kozma finished 30 out of 37 in the 1500 with a time of 4:36.53

Patrick Fletcher finished 34 out of 37 with a time of 4:47.93.

Hassan Itani finished 32 out of 37 with a time of 4:46.58.
