The UPEI Field Hockey is pleased to announce that 15 players selected by head coach Sheila Bell will travel to Toronto on Sept 9th to participate in pre season invitational tournament held by University of Toronto Varsity Blues Field hockey. The tournament will be held once again at the U of T Pan Am water base turf in the downtown University of Toronto campus.
The tournament will host 8 OUA varsity teams plus St Mary's University and UPEI from the Atlantic University Field Hockey league. A total of 20 games will be played over the three day tournament.
Play will begin Friday, Sept 9 3:40 om McMaster vs UPEI
Saturday, Sept 10th 9:50am UPEI vs Queens
3:10 pm UPEI vs Guelph
Sunday, Sept 11th 9:50 am UPEI vs Host U of T
This will be a very competitive tournament for the UPEI team. The last two tournament games will be against Guelph and U of T , both teams finished tied for 1st in 2015 OUA league play. U of T won the OUA championship defeating Guelph 4-3 in Championship game. UPEI finished with a 2-1-1 record at 2015 U of T tournament. Manage Barb Carmichael says, "Last summer UPEI players practiced so we were ready for this tournament. however, without UPEI turf and practicing this summer some players might be "a bit off the touch of the ball," with that said the UPEI squad will be in good physical shape after extensive summer conditioning programs."
Head Coach Sheila Bell UPEI lots of confidence and believes the will play well. If anything, UPEI has chemistry on their sides excluding tje two players who participated at the tournament in 2015, these UPEI players have played together in High school, U-18 Nationals and UPEI.
If there are any interested UPEI field hockey players and along with invited Holland College players will meet Tuesday , Sept 13th at 4:30 pm at UPEI 3rd Gym. This meeting ( followed by a practice will outline the upcoming Atlantic University Field Hockey league. 1. Practice times ( Indoors in 3rd gym for Sept , and outdoors for Oct on the turf) ; 2. Tournament schedule ( Sept 24/25 in Halifax, Oct 15/16 in St FX and AUFH Championship Tournament UPEI Oct 29/30. 3. Fund Raising events, 4. Conditioning program 5.Commitment as a player.
