Varsity Reds sweep Panthers Saturday night

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds completed a weekend sweep of the UPEI Panthers, scoring an 88-56 win, on home court, Saturday.

Javon Masters(Kitchener, ON) led all scorers with 24 points. Masters also had eight rebounds, earning Subway Player of the Game honours.

"For the most part, I'm really happy with our guys and how we played this weekend, even though we had some lapses, defensively," said Masters. "We were really good offensively and we got better."

Chris Spurrell(Quispamsis, NB) came off the UNB bench to score 12, while Iba Doumbouya(Calgary, AB) added 11.

"We're still not satisfied. There's still more that we can work on, but it's a good win," said Masters. "I know I can do whatever I want to do, to be able to score, but if I don't get it going, we have the guys that can score and hit shots. Chris played well, Ogot played well, everyone played well."

Milorad Sedlarevic(Vesenice, SLOV.) led the Panthers. He scored 18 points.

Panthers head coach Darrell Glenn says, despite the loss, his young team learned some lessons.

"The score is relatively the same, but we feel a little bit better about how we competed," he said. "When we look at some of our targets, I'm pretty confident we'll feel like we got a little better tonight."

Glenn says UPEI tried not to focus too much on Masters.

"You want to contain him, but yet they have so many other players that can hurt you," said Glenn. "They put a lot of stress on your defence because they have one player that can go for 30 at any moment. At the same time, if you put too much help on him, they've got guys making wide open shots. They're a very difficult team to defend."

With the win, the Varsity Reds are now 15-and-3 on the season, good for second place in the Atlantic University Sport standings.

"I'm liking how we're playing right now," said Masters. "Everyone is fitting in. For us to hold PEI to under 60 points in both games, our defence is playing really well lately."

UPEI falls to 3-and-15.

Up next for the Panthers, a home court date with the St FX X-Men, on Friday. That game is scheduled to start at 8:00pm.

The Varsity Reds host the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday in a game scheduled to tip-off at 6:00pm.
