Two At UNB… PEI Sr. Men’s League… Remembrance Day
Coach Kendrick looks ahead to a two game set against the Varsity Reds, Remembrance Day, and the PEI Sr. Men's League
A big weekend ahead for us, as we go to Fredericton for two, Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm, to tangle with the UNB Varsity Reds. As many of you know, it is very difficult to win on the road in the AUS. The top team in our league last year was Dal, and I believe they went 4-6 away from home. We are coming off a big win over a tough X squad, after coming back from 17 points down, and are hoping that we can now go on a bit of a run. We had a couple of great practices this week, with lots of energy and enthusiasm on display.
UNB had two tough losses at MUN, but we are not letting that fool us. We know that UNB loaded up over the summer, bringing in several very high quality recruits, and that they were voted to finish much higher than us in several preseason polls. I have known Coach Baker a very long time, and I have no doubt that he will have his V-Reds ready to go. We will need to do a great job on our defensive glass, as UNB currently leads our conference in offensive rebounding, and we will have to limit our turnovers and make good decisions with the basketball if we hope to leave town with a big W!
Our PEI Sr. Men's Basketball League tips off this Sunday with a pair of tilts! In the season opener, we are stealing a tradition from the NFL. From now on, our first game of a new season will always pit the two teams that played in the league final from the previous year! Therefore… the defending Champion Vets will battle with Blue Man Group at 11:00am, while Green Machine and Raiders will hook up at 12:15pm. Another new wrinkle for our league this year, the final will now be a best of three affair! As always, we are excited to host this league in our beautiful facilities here at UPEI!
As everyone knows, tomorrow is Remembrance Day in our country, and in many others around the world. The sacrifice that so many young men and women have made for us over the years to defend our freedom and quality of life is staggering, and should never be taken for granted or forgotten. I spoke to my team in practice the other day to remind them that we would be playing on Remembrance Day, and that we would get the chance to stand tall and proud as our great National Anthem was being played before our game at UNB on a day that means so much to so many. As always, I will especially remember my father proudly tomorrow, as he drove a tank in WWll.
GO PANTHERS GO!
